Reverend Dr. Bruce E. Childs
The Reverend Dr. Bruce E. Childs is the son of the late Mrs. Della V. Childs Lindsey and the late Dr. James E. Childs. He is married to the former Gwendolyn Duncan. They have two children, Edward Wesley Childs and Donna Dione Fobbs; two grandsons, Darius Tevan Childs and Princeton Tyler Childs; great-granddaughter, Lavender; son-in-law, Alton Fobbs; and daughter-in-law, Felicia Childs.
A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Pastor Childs is a member of the Noble Street Baptist Church of Portsmouth, VA, where the pastor is the Reverend Henry P. Jones. Dr. Childs received his early schooling at I.C. Norcum High School. His educational affiliations include Norfolk State University, Evans Smith Leadership Training Institute, Old Dominion University Institute of Labor, and Tidewater Correspondence Bible School. Pastor Childs has a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Richmond Virginia Seminary. He also has an Honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology degree.
Dr. Childs has pastored the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church since September of 1992. He served two terms as Moderator of the Lebanon Virginia Baptist Association and Allied Bodies, and two terms as President of the Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Virginia. Some of his others ministerial affiliations include the Interdenominational Ministers Forum of Portsmouth Virginia and Vicinity, and the Interdenominational Ministers’ Conference. Dr. Childs has served as a faculty instructor for the Norfolk Theological Seminary and College; however, more importantly than any of his degrees and other acclaims, the one thing that he would have you know about him is that he is a “man of God” and has no problem preaching the gospel–in season, out of season, when people want to hear it, and when they don’t want to hear it!
